The Fruit Tree That Could be 10,000 Times Stronger Than Chemotherapy?

The Graviola tree is native to South America and has been found to have numerous health benefits. Many are now discussing its potential application in the treatment of cancer.The healing benefits are predominantly generated from the bark and leaves of the Graviola tree and have been widely acknowledged to help boost the immune system, aid lymphatic drainage, and improve blood circulation. It has powerful anti-oxidants properties and can generally improve moods too. For centuries, various parts of the Graviola tree, including the bark and leaves, but also the roots, fruit and fruit-seeds have been used in particular by the Amazonians and native Indians of South America to treat a range of problems including heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis.

Now, attention is turning to how effective it could be in treating cancer. At this stage the FDA has approved Graviola as an immune booster, but so far has not approved its anti-cancer effects. But there has been independent research carried out on Graviola’s potential anti-cancer effects. Purdue University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences conducted research studying the substances in the tree known as annonaceous acetogenins. They found that these compounds were shown to be powerful at inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in-vitro,
but they had no effect on the non-cancerous cells, unlike chemotherapy which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients. These active compounds also proved effective against the drug-resistant cancer cells as well. In addition, the university also tested the pawpaw fruit, which contains these compounds at a higher concentration. The potential could be huge but human trials need to be carried out.

Another study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin…”, and concurred that healthy cells were untouched.

Currently, it can be taken as an organic supplement to boost the immune system, which contains the most potent part of the plant. Supporters of natural medicine will be following developments closely as the cancer benefits could be enormous.
